Yeah its a good price but specs don't amount to much.

Darn, even so, it sounds like they're getting down to the price of the other computer that's supposed to be for the "developing" world...

And it's got Linux!

Have a great evening!

I disagree. It would depend on the user. The only problem I have is the 256 MB ram. Buy a 1GB strip, and you are good to go with a serviceable notebook for $225. It's not a game machine, and it's not meant for high end graphics, but for web access, writing and spreadsheets, it will do the job. 90% of users don't need more than 40GB disk space.

Those $900 laptops you see from the big guys are sourced from Asian shops for less than $100 in large quantities.

You would have to get the specs on that machine, cause if the memory is soldered on the board to cut cost, you won't be able to expand the memory. There can be a lot of limitations. Remember at 150.00 they might make a lot of custom changes to save money.

There's moe info here.

And the article makes this point:

Quote:
Powering the Medison Celebrity is a 1.5GHz Intel Celeron M 370 processor and 256MB of memory. You may scoff at such a meager memory allotment considering all the reviews out there that complain whenever a PC serves up less than 1GB these days, but the Medison Celebrity doesn't have to power Vista or any other flavor of Windows. Instead, it uses Fedora Linux, which requires less muscle to run than a Windows OS and no Microsoft licensing fee.

I'm very intrigued. I'm looking forward to reviews.

Go here http://www.medisoncelebrity.com/product.html and you will see the full specs, including the expandable memory slot up to 1GB

You have to understand that RAM alone doesnt count to the system's performance !

Have you checked the price of DDR RAM than DDR2 RAM now ? I wouldnt risk getting a DDR RAM..

After getting the laptop there is no point complaining beryl is slow, google earth not running, cant run any 3d effects without sluggishness...so be ready...Intel Celeron Mobile is previous generation by now and if anyone want to downgrade when technology is improving..well...its your choice

Everything you say is true. Obviously you (and I) are not the intended market. All I'm saying is that it is a perfectly satisfactory computer (provided it has reasonalble build quality) for users that do not care about Google Earth, Beryl, or other stuff like that. In case you hadn't noticed, that would be most people.

Having kids, I consider Google Earth a must have option.

How? I don't see a spec stating is has a CD-ROM drive. It appears it lacks a CD-ROM drive.

Update - I just phoned the company. They verified that the laptop does not have a CD-ROM drive. Despite this, they told me they're selling a lot of 'em.

That is odd since their spec page http://www.medisoncelebrity.com/product.html says this: "STORAGE - One changeable 2.5" 9.5mm(H) HDD, Supporting Master mode IDE ATA-33/66/100/133 (Ultra DMA), One changeable 12.7mm(H) CD/DVD Combo"
I believe it is the same unit since clicking "Buy Now!" takes you to the $150 checkout page.

I'm a little confused. Does it or does it not have a CD-ROM drive or at least a slot. ?

No it does not add up. Avoid this offer. The history of the owner is nothing but a string of financial problems and bankruptcies. Send him back to flipping meat balls.

The article cites the company's disclaimer so I checked (almost literally) it out. I got as far as the cc/info page (3rd click) so it would seem that they are still making sales.

Well we could get 150 people in the forum to chip in 1.00 each, then order one, and if its not a scam great, if it is a scam we only loose 1.00 our of our pockets .

Now if its not a scam we could do a forum lottery . Winner gets the laptop.
