I have not been lucky with linspire. Ihave version 5.0.59. My Linksys Wireles wmp54gv4.1 (rt61) is not recognized.
I am new to anything base on linux, and from what I researched, Linspire suppose to be appealing to window users... I have to say that the install was smooth... and the graphical interface is nice... but aside from this.... not being able to configure a nic car is just crazy. I had a post before and Dr. HU was kind enough to give some pointers. But I have to say this are WAY OUT OF MY LEAGUE..... Are there any Executable drivers for this O.S. Just download and install? I visited many sites, (I am new to linux... i you can read), and the one that made sense was http://www.linspireguide.com/Wireless. I move along the steps until step 3 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++ 1. If you have the disk that came with the wireless card, open it and look for any system files. (.INF) otherwise you will have to go to the manufacturer's website for the card you own and download the latest Windows XP drivers. 2. Open up console and change directory to the location of the INF files or file using the CD command. (for example, cd /My*/My*Doc* changes the directory to My Documents) 3. type ndiswrapper -i (driver file).inf (driver file) is the name of the inf file. (repeat for each INF file if you are not sure which one to use) note* you can use this command and load more then 1 inf file. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++ and I get this aguilito:~# cd\mnt\cdrom0\ > wmp54gv4.1\ > ndiswrapper -i rt61.inf bash: cdmntcdrom0wmp54gv4.1ndiswrapper: command not found aguilito:~# Am I typing something wrong????? I really want to give this O.S a chance, but not being able to connect to my home network is really tearing this experience down. |

That particular device seems to be either hit or miss as far as whether it'll work or not. I Googled it and someone offers a fix for it on Gutsy but Freespire is a version behind Gutsy. Some folks claimed the device worked better on Feisty, which is where Freespire/Linspire is now, the newer version anyway. Guess if nothing else you can download Freespire 2 and live boot it and see. ![]()

O.K. This is what I have done. I installed a wire nic I had laying around, fire up the system and BAM, I have internet.. truly amazing how that work... BUT, I run wireless and want to continue doing so.... The reason I got into Linspiere is to experince Linux base OS. I am determined in trying to make my wire card work. Now with the internet on this O.S. I can try much better the more complicated steps suggested. I will post the result. THANKS ALL FOR YOUR COMMENTS!

I just have to jump in here. Have you tried FreeSpire 2? This may work with out any problem. I know your friend gave you his copy to try out but its my understanding the FS supports more devices. LS is more on the side of support as FS is more on the side of more devices the better. I was a LS user till I found it did not support my linksys 54g card, but FS did. So I have been using FS ever since. So with the time it has taken you to get this far you could easily down load FS 2 and burn it to CD. I did this last Saturday and from download to finish install it was just over an hour. If not for having to burn Linux ISO on the slow sopped side it would have been much quicker.
So if I were you I would take the time to DL FS 2 burn it then do a fresh install and see if that helps. You never know it just might. Noel Vh

If Linspire or Freespire don't work for you, then try another Linux distro. Don't give up on Linux.

Use your working copy to dl and burn fs 2.0. Burning iso's in Linspire couldn't be easier. With file manager, locate the dled iso file, right click on the file, select >write cd image with k3b.

I'm with you.
I spent about 6 days trying to get wifi to work and it's simply not worth it. I suppose if one buys a Linux system pre configured it works ok but this nonsense of trying to get an existing laptop to work is not worth my time. For the record, I bought Linspire 6, downloaded and installed Freespire and Ubuntu as well, visited seemingly endless number of web pages all with different suggestions, tried every configuration posted, on and on and on, bought a new wifi card to try... (btw, any reason why the Linspire help pages dont' show the same screens that I'm looking at it? Yeah, that's the way to frustrate somebody, don't update your pages with the latest info). Thanks to those who tried to help and kudos to you folks that have the patience to do this, but this ain't what I call easy computing. Only one thing †o say - I'm done. Bought a MacBook and couldn't be happier. |

Oh my- it dose sound like you had a very hard time. I for one am very sorry to hear your story. I do have one question what is cheaper a Linksys wifi 54g pcimcia card, or a mac book? I am sure you are happy, but at a very high price. Noel Vh.

Again, I would like to state, "I have found Freespire 1.0.13 to be almost flawless. On the 14 computers that I have installed this Os, not one single problem." |

FS 1 did not work on my IBM T43 or my T30 laptop cause of the wifi cards. Both cards were Intel, and both work under FS2, and LS6 Noel Vh.

As was the case with one of my laptops I ended up finding a 20 linksys wireless card at microcenter and used that to run Linspire 5 until 6.0 came out. Now I am running Linspire 6.0.17, Ubuntu 7.10, Freespire 2.0.8, XP SP3, and Vista Ultimate. |

I don't blame you. I've tried both Linspire and Freespire on 2 different laptops and they both are a joke. First laptop is an Acer Aspire 5100 and Linspire won't even start the install due to some issue with the sound card. It has a Realtek HD sound card which has been around at least 3 years and there are issues? What...are you kidding? Not a very common sound card right? NOT!!! Freespire on the same laptop loads but constantly locks up. Also cannot get connected to internet with either wireless or wired. Wireless is an Atheros AR5001TX which is another very common card but refuses to work. Wired connection will not keep ip address. I use static ip and I keep typing in the info and saving the profile and FS keeps changing it. Guess it doesn't understand what "Manual" means. Second laptop is a Fujitsu Lifebook N5010. Linspire loads but then locks up as soon as the desktop loads. Haven't bothered to try Freespire and won't bother to. I am going back to Mandriva 2008. Mandrivia is so far ahead of LS and FS it isn't even funny. Everything works right out of the box!! Full support for most new hardware and the main thing is it supports all my hardware 100%. You have the Mandriva Control Center which gives so much more control then the standard KDE Control Center. Supports RPM files which seem to be much more common and easy to obtain. The LS/FS devlopers need to take a lesson from the Mandriva developers.

You know I used both FS/LS side by side and I have never run into any thing missing.

Linspire 6 has licensed codecs and ms stuff that Freespire does not have. So you did not pay money for nothing. There are codes and propietary stuff that Linspire can not put in freespire, since its free. Let me tell you these licenses/codecs and stuff is not cheap, which is why other Linux distros dont even have them ! Thats where Linspire 6 shines above the rest. I can honestly say it runs out of the box and all of the stuff is ready to go. Ray ![]() |
