Default Saving download programs

I have burned a copy of my downloads. How do I re-install the programs when I change hard drives? Can I just enter a command and have all the programs reloaded on the system?

Default Re: Saving download programs

Just want to comment sir, i too plan to upgrade my HDD and thinking of a way to save all my prevously download .deb files so that i wont download them again when i set up my new HDD. if you saved all your .deb files onto a cd, my plan of approach after i finish installing the new OS will be transfer all the .deb files from the cd onto /var/cache/apt/archives/ folder. by doing so i'm expecting that synaptic or apt will recognize that i already have the necessary files to install all the programs i had before and wont download them again from the repos which i think will speed up the UPDATING/Installations a fair bit. I plan also to do the installation using synaptic, it's just a matter of searching and putting a check mark on the program i want to have installed, then when i have checked them all i just let synaptic install them all. Again "Assuming" that synaptic picks up that i have all the deb files in the /var/cache/apt/archives/ it should be quite a breeze. Suggestions and corrections welcome

Cool Re: Saving download programs

There is no single magic command that will know what you want exactly, so no, you cannot just execute some command and get the system with all the software you had previously installed
--or try aptoncd (load a CD dvd with packages list and can restore from that

apt-cdrom [options] command

apt-cdrom is a tool to add CDROM's to APT's source list. The
CDROM mount point and device information is taken from apt.conf
and /etc/fstab.

Commands:
add - Add a CDROM
ident - Report the identity of a CDROM
The method that comes to mind is either CNR aisles (when working) or dpkg-deb to create binary installs of the apps you want..
  • Use dpkg-deb to create a system(of apps) that can be transferred
  • Use CNR aisles to create a ssystem (of apps) that can be transferred
  • use apt & CD to create a system (of apps) than can be transferred

There are also some trick methods you could try as an experiment

Default Re: Saving download programs

I have just installed 6.0.15 on a laptop and cnr works fine.
The problem arises when the laptop can get to hotspots and install programs, but when I install 6.0.15 at home on the desktop, the dialup speed is 28,8
In my previous versions (5.0.59) cnr'd programs were kept in the repository, then I would made a cd, install them at home, run cnr and they would install quickly, withn only small items being downloaded. Can I still do that with los 6? or do I have to do this aptcd thing. is aptcd available from cnr?

All help is appreciated
thanks
