I hear that people have been able to install software with cnr, but I have not been able to even run cnr. It pops up in the task bar, and is initializing, but never does anything! Right clicking it does nothing, and the hard drive is being accessed, but nothing happenes. I have reinstalled CNR several times, but no go. I am running Freespire 1.9.0, upgraded to the final build. I would install 2.0, but I am out of CD-R's!

Can anyone explain who decided to eliminate the winmodem modules from the FS 2 kernel? The major selling point of FS 1 was that it had decent winmode support and autoconfiguration for Intel, Agere and Smart Link modems.
FS 2 has REMOVED all of those modules. Why, FS 2 is as useless as Ubuntu! Congratulations for making FS 2 unusable for the Great unwashed who do not have cable modems. |

'...I think they are putting WUBI in Gutsy - if that makes it to FS that will be great...
Sounds like BeOS to me |

FWIW, CNR never worked for me either using the update path. Looks like you're going to need to invest in at least one more blank cd. ![]()

I just finished installing Freespire 2.0 in VWware Fusion. It works quite well but CNR is still down.

i think it is ready to prime time ... you should think of it as a new type of release it is based on Ubuntu and not Debian like Freespire 1.0.13 so it is only normal it have some thinks that is not working but overall it is the best Lin/Freespire release i think and maybe when Linspire 6.0 comes out thy fixed some of the bugs i Ubuntu so when Freespire 2.1 or 3.0 comes out it will be better and the Dev theam has made a solid base build form Ubuntu repos so give them time .... |

I'm pretty sure that Linspire 6.0 still has them all. Quote:
I'd like to update them to a faster loading LS version but am a tad leery to do so with the CNR still being worked on. They'd suffer from withdrawl symptoms if pried away from their Pogo for very long. ![]()

Boy, all i can say is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. i would highly recommend you try it out on their computer, but in a different partition at the very least, so if it's not satisfactory, they still have access to the partition with the original OS and their program on it. Have a great afternoon! ![]()

It should boot up to a menu screen when you turn the computer on with the cd in the drive. That is assuming it was burned as an ISO image and you have the CDRom or DVD drive set as a bootable drive. tom |

You don't "load" the CD in Linux. Freespire is a complete Linux system, designed to be installed on a blank hard drive, or as another operating system, as another option to select at boot time. The way you worded your question leads me to believe you are rather new to all this. Not a problem, we all were there at one time or another, and we are here to help. But please, don't make the second choice if you do not understand the concepts of partitions, and multiple operating systems, as you could wipe out your Windows or your exististing Linux installation. It's best to experiment with Linux on a hard drive that you don't care what happens to the existing files. The Freespire (or most other Linux distros) file that you download ends in ".iso". This is the standard designation for an image file. You need to burn it to a CD, using the image burning utility that is part of most CD burning software. This is not the same as writing the file to a blank CD. Waldo |

Howdy rayratliff: Welcome to Freespire and the forum. We have all been in the position you are in right now at some point. As stated in an earlier post the Freespire is a opperating system that is a distrobution of Linux based on Ubuntu. If you place the cd in in your computer and restart or shut off the machine and restart Freespire should load automatically. It would be very helpfull if you could let us know what kind of machine you have and things like what kind of processor, how much ram, how big your hard drive is and what is already loaded on it if anything. So if what I tell you does not work for some reason and you need to repost to the forum with further questions, please include that info. In the meantime though I can explain how you can check Freespire out. When you restart the machine with the cd in the machine the usual things that happen when you start up will happen and then a screen will come up which says Freespire with a text menu, which will look like this. Install freespire Run freespire from CD those top two choices will be the ones you will be interested in at this point. Install freespire is highlighted, and you will see a timer ticking down seconds. Push the down arrow on your keyboard to highligt Run freespire from CD and press enter on your keyboard. Then you just wait until the welcome screen comes up. Then a Lincense screen comes up. In the text box click on freespire and select accept the terms then click next. Then a sound setting screen comes up which allows you to move a slider right or left to adjust the volume. Then click next and a settings screen comes up. You can just click next here because you are just running from the CD right now and if you decide to install to a hard drive or other source later, these settings can be made then. In most cases the defaults will work well enough to decide if you want to install or not. Then a CNR Subscribe screen comes up, again for right now click next to move on. Then a browser opens and takes you to a CNR sign in screen. For now just close the browser and you will be at freespires desktop. You have not installed anything yet or changed your computer at all. Freespire is just running from the CD. Now you can try it out and make sure that the internet is working and all your hardware. You can evaluate freespire now and see if you want to install it or not, if everything seems to be working and you want to install later. When you are done evaluating it you could just shut it down, follow the screen directions and you will have changed nothing on your machine. You can repeat the process anytime later if you decide to install. If you have further questions leave another post or leave me a private message on this forum and I and others will be glad to help. If for some reason the first freespire screen does not come up with the menu, get back to me and I can help you to get it to come up. Your machine could be set not to boot to a cd, though unless you have changed the original Bios settings, that would be very rare. If you do need further help remember to give us the information that I mentioned at the top of our post. You need to think about what you have on the machine already and whether you want to keep it or replace it with freespire and there are many options once you have decided. Welcome again to freespire and this forum and I hope you love it as much as I do. If you need more help, feel free to get back to us anytime. Most of us are users just like you and we try to help each other out. If you don't get an answer immediately just keep checking back someone will usually post back before too long. Later... cosbear |

Hey Guys:
Problems or not a lot of people are interested in checking out FS2. I got 7,866 requests for the iso file on my mirror page yesterday and 97% completed. It was up from Tuesday, maybe in part, because I read somewhere that the trackers for the torrent stream were down again. I think it's great that a lot of people are checking it out. The more, the stronger. Later... cosbear |

Someone Posted earlier wanting to know if there was gonna be support for FS2 that won't run on a Machine that Linspire 5.x.x runs on. I want the same answer!!
I can't believe my 64bit PC Can't run this 32 bit OS that the Previous version and Linspire 4.5, and 5-0 RUN FLAWLESS ON!!!!!!!!! Dude this is driving me nuts! Why can't I get this Program to run?? At This point I'm ready to say the heck with FS2 and Stick with FS1 Since I know It Works!!!!!!!! That Or Switch To Ubuntu 7 and Hunt down the codecs and just use CNR once it comes online. This is looking more and more like a Microsoft Ploy to get you to buy a MS based/backed Product so They can control your PC. I'm not installing Vista..........IT'S CRAP!!!! I mean come on......We had to Lauch a Shuttle to the international space station so someone could "Allow or Deny"!!! I don't need that kinda crap on my network or my PC for that matter. When is the FS2 Service Pack coming out?? Or will that just be fore Linspire 6 since MS is backing it?? (I'm Being Sarcastic.....I hope it don't happen)

other than cnr type installs you should be able to save stuff to usb stick or a data hd if ya got one in the system. Game and program saves won't work, but data - - - yes!
![]() I know I can access these from the live. ![]()

Well SOMEONE didn't like my last opinion I posted!! I didn't realize I had to be politically correct concerning MS.
Anyways Back to the Problem at hand........................ Good news is I got FS2 to work. Bad News is that it wasn't on the PC I really wanted it to work on! Someone PLEASE explain to me why my Dell Optiplex 70mhz PC with 256mb ram can run FS2 Without problem As well as Ubuntu 7 but my 2 P4/Celeron 3.2 & 4.0 GHZ with 512mb of Ram Cannot? One is a Custom PC the other is a HP Pavillion. I DON'T GET IT!!!!!! I've used the "Busybox" modprobe piix "Workaround" and It does nothing. I've tried changing the VGA resolution to see if that played a part. I've D/L'ed Multiple ISO's to make sure that I had a Good Copy of FS2........And It Still don't work! I must say I was pleased to see some of the improvements in FS2, but Will I be able to use them?????? Is there certain Hardware this OS is just NOT compatable with? What Changed from the Ubuntu Core to FS2 that Ubuntu works and FS2 won't??? This is Really FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
