Default How to connect to encripted wireless

We moved into the basement of a house where the lady upstairs has dsl broadcast wirelessly, but it's encripted. I can't seem to get the key she gave me to work. It's an 8-digit key, I think. It's not a password, is it?

Also, not sure what I did (I tend to try things and sometimes it gets me in trouble), but now the place on the taskbar where I can click to connect to the wireless network has changed and looks something like a thumb drive and doesn't give me the option to connect to the wireless network. It says something about manual, but I don't know how to change it back.

Any ideas?

Well an 8-digit key would be a passphrase, since WEP using a 10 digit key, and WPA uses a 26 digit key to connect. So ask her which it is, verify the key and go forward from there.

If it is a passphrase, then right click on the tray icon for Knetwork Manager, leave it set at Passphrase and enter the passphrase. It is actually 10 digits then using the same process, but click on the down arrow in the Passphrase field, change it to 40/64 bit hex and enter the key, then click connect.
