OK this computer is messnig with my brain lol
I just got a new (to me at least) computer and downloaded my linspire OS on it. It works but refuses to connect to the web. The wired setting shows up in the network manager and it says its enabled but it won't wont and no websites work I went into network settnigs and it keeps saying gateway is wrong (0.0.0.0). I changed it and still get the problems because everytime I reboot the correct gateway disappears. I had it set for DHCP but it was creating a totally random IP starting with 169 when my IP block is 65....... i tried clearing teh weird IP out of manual settings and selecting DHCP again and same thing. I restart and everythi8ng defaults back to the useless setting it previously had. I have a T1 from an ISP and its directly connectd to the router. My other Linux computers work fine on the same exact port on the router and I didn't ahve to do anything to set them up, they just worked. any ideas why its possessed or how to fix it? |

Quote:
The problem is your machine cannot connect to the ?ISP dhcp server Quote:
--so that wouldn't prevent a connection, but you should check the firewall settings to make sure.. |

ok I restarted again and the "closed" was automatically changed to "open to local connections" so none of the changes I'm making are taking and i have no idea why

i went thru firestarter to set it up and it said there is something wrong with my NIC card.
it said to check the network device, but i have no idea where to check it. Ive gone through every menu i could find anf did a "find" and it found nothing relevant |

lsmod --which network module is being loaded lspci --which network card(s) are being detected knetworkmanager (networkmanager) --if using Debian/Ubuntu type linux --what are the settings it has for network, firewall files
Some of those comparisons on your own system will help determine the issue ! In a terminal window (konsole) My lspci shows.. Quote:
My lsmod shows.. via_rhine 25736 0 --which is the network card on that system. It is not included in /etc/modules as it was automatically detected... if yours is not (detected), you will need to use sudo modprobe the card name on command line; then include it in /etc/modules to load on startup.. |
