I have my suspicions about why not, but am not sure. I have Norton GoBack installed on the xp installation, but it had been disabled prior to installing linspire. I also have Acronis Disk Director installed on the xp installation, but there were no actions pending prior to linspire install. The OS selector within Acronis was not activated.

My major concern now is being able to boot to windows xp, and I suspect the easiest way is to remove grub installed by linspire and linspire itself. Can someone help me here please?

Just removing grub will do nothing, unless you replace it on the MBR with something. I'm told that the XP install disk has an option for rewriting the MBR, which should be all you need to make your XP bootable. Making both systems bootable is harder, and I don't know why grub doesn't see your XP, though my guess would be that it has something to do with the Acronis Disk Director. I really know nothing about that program, so it's just a guess.
Removing Linspire won't have any effect on booting XP.

to reinstall the xp bootloader:

1. insert the windows xp disc
2. press "r" to go into repair mode
3. select the windows installation you want to log on to (probably #1)
4. type the administrator password
5. run fixboot
6. run fixmbr
