Hi All,

Brand new to linspire/linux.. did alot of reading about getting my dvd burner running and success so far, i still cannot get it to burn faster than x2.4?.. tried running as root and burn, no help... there is just no option to burn any faster (in K3b). Im running an NEC burner rated upto 16x and Linspire5.0 and it seems to be reporting and identifing my dvd+rw correctly). Im using the same media/hardware config i used under winxp. Also if i use hdparm -t /mnt/dvd or /mnt/cdrom0 it shows that DMA is enabled and its setup the way i see it on other posts... Also i notice the burns are a little jumpy during playback... i use K3b to burn... And lastly, It does say (using hdparm -d1 /mnt/dvd) something like "Inappropriate ioctl for device"..

Any help would greatly be appreciated...

Does it burn faster in Windows or other versions of Linux? Is it internal or USB?

The dvd writer will operate at different speeds depending on media, the readback (playback) of the burn (write) will depend on the playback reader software...
http://www.geocities.com/siliconvalley/lab/6125/linux/nd3500a.html
The read speeds are 48x for CDs and 16x for DVDs. The write speeds are as follows: 16x DVD-R, 4x DVD-R Dual Layer, 4x DVD+R9, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 48x CD-R, 24x CD-RW.

Probably useful to know exact model # for this Nec.

How well does K3b do on cds', does it write at 24x or better ? and is that the model of nec you have ?

Ubuntu suggestions ..

This is what is reported by hdparm -i /dev/dvd and is correct

Model=_NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A, FwRev=1.A0, SerialNo=
Config={ Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }
RawCHS=0/0/0, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0
BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=0kB, MaxMultSect=0
(maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0
IORDY=yes, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2
AdvancedPM=no

I use Verbatim dvd+r 16x disks, same disks i have used under winxp.. i stopped and bought some tdk 16x dvd+r and im getting the same results..

I burned of a cd and it worked at 16x (k3b allowed me to select upto 16x)... the dvd burner (i was wrong) is an 8x dvd+r burner... but now i've tried 2 types of media with the same results, can only burn at 1x or 2x...

any ideas?

Thanks in advance... jaevel

Just 2...

1. Try running k3b as a root user, start it from the terminal
--root user mmight get more accurate speed rating from drive...
2. Try using growisofs directly to write the file..
--may be faster than gui method..

Look at this file..
http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/hcn.html

It seems that either a firmware update or that the speed be sticking with a previously selected speed for writing, ie 2x instead of highest speed possible..they list a solution..
Recording speed chosen by Plextor PX-708A, possibly other units...
growisofs expects recorder unit to readjust the list of supported velocities and pick optimal one upon every media re-load. Plextor unit (and possibly some other units) reportedly tends to retain once chosen velocity value
...
growisofs -speed=256
