So I'm in the store the other day and see the Unreal Anthology DVD for $20 USD. Being a fan of Unreal since the the first game (but never owning Unreal 2 or UT2K4) I figured I would check it out. As I'm looking at the package I see a Tux on the bottom of the box but no mention of Linux anywhere else.
After some research I find out that although these games did have Linux ports, the Linux installers are not present on this DVD and the DVD is made up of non Linux friendly Cab files. But people were still able to get these games installed and runnng natively in Linux.
So far I've only installed Unreal Tournament 2004. All I had to do was run the installer with Codeweavers (http://www.codeweavers.com/) Crossover Wine (30 day trial). The installation was faster than I remember it being in Windows when at a LAN party someone would pass me a book of like 5 or 6 CD's. Once installed, download the latest Linux patch and copy the folders over the corresponding folders in your unreal 2k4 installation. Then you need to copy
/usr/lib/libSDL-1.2.so.0 to-> /UTinstallfolder/System/./libSDL-1.2.so.0, and /usr/lib/libopenal.so.0.0.0 to-> /UTinstallfolder/System/openal.so
If you do not have those two files in your /usr/lib/ folder (the file names may be slightly different) you can CNR them. If you end up having sound problems like I did, you will need to download a new openal.so file from www.openal.org (http://www.openal.org/), just download the rpm and use alien to covert it to a deb file, you may need to uninstall the CNR version first or you will have a deb package conflict.
The last thing you will need to do is add a 'CDKey' file to the System folder with your CD Key in it (ex, xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx). Now just run /UTinstallerfolder/System/ ./ut2004-bin
If you need more information check out these forums that I referenced, also try searching for 'Unreal Anthology on Linux' through google.

Hmm, both UT2003 and UT2004 came with a Linux installer on the original CD's (the 2003 edition never mentioned it and the installer is on the last disc though).
andyways, did you check the site LOKI Installer for Linux Gamers (http://www.liflg.org/?catid=6) ??

Unreal 1 worked thru wine or thru a fancy hack to UT that allowed it to be run thru there using the native UT linux binaries.
UT, UT2003, UT2004 all work natively on linux
Unreal 2 never has worked period on linux that I have been aware of. Cedega nor vanilla wine. Could be wrong, I would check the cedega wiki or the appdb for wine to ensure that though. I am positive on the rest since I own them all :D Including the expansion to U1.

Some more hacking is required to use those installers with the Anthology since the DVD contains Cab files. From what I've read all you need is a program called unshield and it will unpack those files back the way they were on the original disks, but the directory structure is a bit different and you need to rename some folders before those installers will work.
But on a side note, thanks, I didn't know where people were finding those. Also I didn't know the original disks were cross platform. Any idea why tuxgames.com is selling a "Linux version" of UT2004 for $40? That is why I was excited to see I could natively run this version for $20 plus 3 other games. While we are at it... anyone know if Quake 4 is the same way, Linux installer hidden on the "Windows only" disk?

Nope, I guess they want to make some money :D
I bought the Windows PC version of UT2003 and UT2004 and both worked flawless on Linux (only there is a CD naming "problem" with the installer for UT2003 so when it asks for Disc 2 it actually needs disc 1 since disc 1 is the PLAY disc, or something like that).

The UT 2003 had the installer, but didnt advertise it well at all. UT2004 had the logo for Linux. Both used the Loki installer.
As for the Quakes, all are Linux compatible, as all of the games from iD these days are. Quake 4 I bought as part of the collectors set, the game DVD and then a bonus DVD with another copy (for me) of Q2 and all of the expansions + some making of footage and interviews. Well worth the money. ASFAIK the Linux client was a bit late (a month give or take a week IIRC), so no client. But you can download the latest.
As for Tuxgames, the gent that runs that for the most part will remaster the discs so that the main way to install it is in Linux. For example, the UT discs had the weirdo bug aforementioned corrected. And NWN had the installer built right in to the disc, no need to go do any vodoo.

Ah yes I found the Quake 4 linux installer, one requirement for the installer is a Windows Version of Quake 4, lol. Quick check on ebgames.com, quake 4 is now also $20, Woot. And all this time I've been eyeing the tuxgames price of $55 and the 10 day shipping wait.

At least the latter counts as a linux game sale. Alas, the shipping wait is what does it generally for me.

Yeah I felt really ripped of when I got the Unreal Anthology DVD because as soon as I saw Tux I thought, awesome all the games ported to Linux on one DVD.
I ended-up having to hired UT2004 from the video store and installing it with my Anthology key
Thanks for this post. You'll notice there is now Windows logo to be found on the box, so I think they stuffed up big and put Tux in place of it. It's apparently the publisher's idea to drop Linux support for the games.

Thats why I hadn't bought any of these games yet, I was holding out for some extra cash to buy from them, but after seeing this

I don't see this as making the game developers see any demand. From the looks of how ID is doing this (windows version + patch makes Linux version) my guess would be they don't care what the demand is, they will just keep making Linux compatible games. I see this as very good since too many developers are obsessed with this whole "is there demand?" thing. Cough! EA Cough!

iD is a bit different, but either way I would say choose wisely with your cash. Spending extra money that you really dont have is pointless. Throwing money that could be much better used at what is in essence a political cause is not wise. Personally for a Quake or Doom sale, take the extra cash and throw it toward the EFF and stick with an over the counter sale from Best Buy or Gamestop.
NWN and others are worth it since for some reason only iD has sane setups for non nerds. Epic is getting better, alot better. NWN was a joke, and a sick one at that. Others cant be installed from a windows copy (like Hyperion's offerings or most of Loki's titles).

Wait. I'm confused. So unreal 2k7 can run on linux just not if its from the anthology pack? And quake 4 can run on linux without problems on install? I dunno. I'm confused.

To avoid any confusion you can just get your games from TuxGames
(http://www.tuxgames.com/browse.cgi?&category=all)
That way you've got a 100% guarantee your getting a Linux game and your fully supporting the Linux game scene this way too.

2K4 can be installed from the anthology DVD but with a lot tinkering. And for Quake 4 (just bought it and it rules) you only need to download the Linux patch for the game and follow the install instructions, basically run the installer then copy a bunch of files from the CD's.
