Canonical Ltd. are the official sponsors of Ubuntu Linux, with Mark Shuttleworth providing the funding, via Canonical, to move Ubuntu forward. So far, about $15-20 million has been spent.

And even at this point in time, with the top Linux distribution, the future is very uncertain. Mr. Shuttleworth has stated himself that it might take another two years before he even knows whether Canonical/Ubuntu has a chance to become profitable.

Why yes, and then on marketing it -- same thing Linspire does.

the popular kid does not stay popular forever - even the uber: popular

business solutions IS where the money is, period! You keep the desktop user happy with the basic product (fedora) while implementing solutions using the business product (RedHat)

To answer my own question "Is Ubuntu Linux slowly dying?", I would have to say "Yes." For the simple reason that there is no money to be made offering support on the desktop. For a Linux distribution to be profitable, it has to cater to businesses. Businesses will purchase support contracts as a safety cushion, to have someone to blame, and for real support issues [and sometimes in that exact order]. The average end-user will not...
That's true it is in business that money can be had (taken)

Microsoft has a desktop OS (XP and Vista), they expect to sell xxx millions of versions, is that small change, I don't think so..
--they are also in the game console business.

If I was in the linux business for profit, (and one may ask, what other normal reason is there to be a business), i would look to entertainment opportunities as the most viable alternative, such as game consoles, media distribution servers

The question is, ?is there more money in hardware (products) or software (services). Software is only a virtual product, it's real nature is the services it can support..

No spam comes in a small rectangular metal can and is made of meat and meat biproducts. Some consider it tasty -- while other revile it. Spam can be used with eggs in a many different ways as we have learned from Monty Python. :D

Don't say anything about Spam if you're in Hawaii, those guys love the stuff.

Apparently the US brought a bunch of the stuff over for the troops during WWII and the Hawaiians grew a taste for it. Now it's on most of the menu's when you walk into any of the local eating places over there.

Anyway, I just think ....Ubuntu.

Same here in Okinawa. Very popular. One of my favorite dishes is Goya Champaru where the Spam is mixed with Goya (bitter melon) and stir fried with some other veggies and tofu. ....Actually not usually 'Spam' anymore, but some of the other brands.

Ironic that Linspire/Freespire will now be based on Ubuntu isn't it? Personally I've not found Linspire/Freespire to be any less buggy than any other major distrobution. The two real advantages Linspire has had over other ditros targeting desktop users, imho, are its speedy installation and the one click installation provided by CNR.

I for one am glad to see Linspire/Freespire take a step forward by moving to using Ubuntu as its foundation. After all isn't that what makes Open Souce such a great thing, not reinventing the wheel rather start with the basic wheel and enhance it so that it is faster, stronger, more duable, all around better?

Dont forget to add that this is the mating of the best of both worlds. Personally out of all the distros out there, Ubuntu is the cleanest and simplest free distro for end-users. Red Hat may be the god linux distro (OpenBSD is the real god) of servers, their dsktop usage is primarily for peeps in the know. Ubuntu is what Fedora is aiming to be more like.

On the other front, out of all the commercial options, Linspire is the only one worth using. CNR is great (only a bigot/zealot can disagree there), and makes USING the computer just plain simple.

Blend these two together. Add commerical support. Linux nirvana practically. Only better thing I could think of (not that I see it happening here) is a CNR-like frontend to a ports style software installation method. But that's another story/topic/realm/adventure to be discusses probably elsewhere ;D

Needless to say, my conundrum of which ONE distro to push and support is no longer a problem. If Linspire can truly add their flavor to a Ubuntu base, it is Linspire. Either way, Ubuntu + CNR is pretty damn nice too.
