So, my problem is I can't get more than a 31200kbs connection. My e-mac connects at 45333kbs and an old G3 powerbook connects at 42000 something kbs, both using internal apple modems. On my freespire machine I'm using an Actiontec external modem. What do I have to do to get a faster connection speed? It took a while to configure KPPP, I thought I had everything right but couldn't enter user name and password. Screwed with it some more then for some reason it started working like it is supossed to and I was able to connect. I'm using it now but it's so slooooow. Any help?

it's set to the max. I tried changing the connection speed but it made no difference.
You can't compare both since they are different hardwares.
The external modem is, usually, independent and more reliable than softmodems.
Have you checked the modem specifications? (56K, V.92 etc)
I would make a try using another landline (preferably away from your home). Your connection is being established in a very low bps, this my indicate bad quality line (and I'm not referring to 'voice frequency' here) or that you are too far away from the central.
Just some ideas.

If you have a noisy phone line and your external modem is not V.44 and V.42 compliant, that may be the best that you can expect. I had a USR V.90 external Sportster that gave me 700 bps in good weather. FS 1 is working with a Netodragon/Smart Link PCI soft modem at 4 kbs.

Is your actiontec modem a v.92 modem ? USB or Serial port? Modem qualities vary from model to model.
