The initial announcement about this left some room for interpretation.

This states more clearly the reasoning behind the decision to not use proprietary video drivers by default. Basically the 3D desktop technology is a bit lacking in maturity and if that technology is not included by default the most pressing reason to use proprietary video drivers is removed.

I really dont have a problem with the points he's making, 3D does need to mature.

As for video drivers, well thats a choice that is up to the user.

Nice to see them support Nouveau....

Some of the reports made it sound like it was the maturity of the proprietary drivers that was the significant factor in the decision. It's been the case more with ATI than Nvidia, but ATI and Nvidia both have some quirky issues with their proprietary drivers. At least on the ATI side there has been a range of Radeon cards supported by an open source driver for a while and for the hardware it works with I think it should be the default.
