So when ya say that , Upgrade path available from Freespire 1.0 not fully tested (apt-get dist-upgrade) that you want some testing done. Ok, as soon as I finish downloading I'll give it a go but first a question 'bout this statement.
Apt repository is pointing to Freespire repositories.
That is the same Sources list (http://wiki.freespire.org/index.php/Sources_list) that I used to apt-get dist-upgrade to Freespire 1.0 correct?
Cheers

Nope (Yikes need to update that page also). The .iso sources.list has specific entries pointing to new Freespire 2.0 repositories...
Glad I ask, although I"m sure I could use an apt-get dist-upgrade to the 1.0 repositories, might fix my CnR issue :). Anyway, you'll let us know when the new sources.list is posted.
Cheers

Ok, I grabed the sources.list off of the LiveCD and I started the dist-upgrade, but before I say yes I wanted to post the warning.

I used the bcm43xx-fwcutter.deb file to do this.

Ok, I grabed the sources.list off of the LiveCD and I started the dist-upgrade, but before I say yes I wanted to post the warning.
While I'm not afraid to do this, I've a backup of the install, I am a wee bit concerned 'bout;
WARNING: The following essential packages will be removed
This should NOT be done unless you know exactly what you are doing!
sysvinit
Will I bullox everything up due to this or am I being a worry wort?
Mind you this is my Linspire install that I dist-upgraded to Freespire so well I dona know.First sources.list (http://wiki.freespire.org/index.php/Sources_list) page has been updated. This will be no worse than updating Freespire 2.0 to Debian sid :). Yes testing an apt-get dist-upgrade would be appreciated [Note: This is Alpha software that might result in instability to a system, so not recommended on a production machine]. From what the developers are saying if a package never existed on the previous version the dist-upgrade wouldn't necessarily bring it in, so there might be differences between an upgraded FS 1.0.13 than a stock FS 1.1.84...

Well, ok, it's the same as the other alphas (1 & 2), do the following when kdm comes up;
Hit Ctrl+Alt+F4
login as root
type passwd then add yur root password, twice
exit
ya might have to hit Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get back to kdm
Now you can login as root.

Name Service Switch update in the C Library: pre-installation question.
Running services and programs that are using NSS need to be restarted,
otherwise they might not be able to do lookup or authentication any more.
The installation process is able to restart some services (such as ssh or
telnetd), but other programs cannot be restarted automatically. One such
program that needs manual stopping and restart after the glibc upgrade by
yourself is xdm - because automatic restart might disconnect your active
X11 sessions.
Known packages that need to be stopped before the glibc upgrade are:
xdm kdm gdm postgresql xscreensaver
This script did not detect any installed services which need to be
stopped.
If you want to interrupt the upgrade now and continue later, please
answer No to the question below.
Do you want to upgrade glibc now? [Y/n] y

Name Service Switch update in the C Library: post-installation question.
Running services and programs that are using NSS need to be restarted,
otherwise they might not be able to do lookup or authentication any more
(for services such as ssh, this can affect your ability to login).
Note: restarting sshd/telnetd should not affect any existing connections.
The services detected are:
inetd rsync cupsys cron ssh
If other services have begun to fail mysteriously after this upgrade, it is
probably necessary to restart them too. We recommend you to reboot your
machine after the upgrade to avoid the NSS related trouble.
Do you wish to restart services? [Y/n] y
Restarting services possibly affected by the upgrade:
inetd: stopping...starting...done.
rsync: stopping...starting...done.
cupsys: stopping...starting...done.
cron: stopping...starting...done.
ssh: stopping...starting...done.

I'm thinking this thread is for the testing of Alpha3? I have most everything working fine here. Running from live cd mode and the only thing that I've found that didn't work is the card games. (Big deal) An issue with the Jack audio system was overcome with alsaconf. Ran Kmix after and set my card to the proper selection and all's good. Overall, I'd give this Alpha release 3 1/2 of 5 stars! Good job ya'll!

Cool. I got the Synaptic manager installed so that's ok.

First sources.list (http://wiki.freespire.org/index.php/Sources_list) page has been updated.
Well I'm not sure if this is of any value, or even worth while doing, but I installed a debian etch base install, following Chris' instructions in Debian etch - HowTo do a minimal setup with KDE (http://forum.freespire.org/showthread.php?t=2087&highlight=etch) (mind you I didna install kde/gnome I stopped @ xorg). Then I did an apt-get dist-upgrade utilizing the above sources.list (http://wiki.freespire.org/index.php/Sources_list).
I got no errors this time & things seem to have gone to plan.

I installed from the new Alpha 3 ISO. Nary a problem so far, once I got all the alsa utilities and my SBLive card working.
Would I seriously mess anything up by removing JACK?

I havena tryed removing Jack in any of the alphas. If irc, jack is woven into kde and by removeing it one might remove some kde stuff and/or make it (kde or some stuff) unuseable. Give it a try & let us know.

OK, I've a question. When I boot this new dist-upgrade, it takes 20 seconds to get to the clp login (the deb install prior to the upgrade took 'bout one minute). That's cool. I added kdm via freespire's sources.list & it still boots to the clp login in 20 seconds. If I wait another 55 seconds (total time from grub, 1.15) without loging in kdm kicks in & I get the gui login 20 seconds later (total time from grub 1.30).
How do I make kdm go right to kdm once the clp login comes up (eliminating the 55 second delay)?
Cheers

So, if I did a fresh install of Freespire 1, updated the sources list to the new ones containing the stuff for Freespire 2 and did apt-get dist-upgrade, would that conceviably give me what is Alpha 3 now?

That is how I understand things. But I guess without CnR (and some of the stuff one as bought there) it's nothing really more then a debian install. That said, I believe it's only a matter of time till the new CnR is on offer.

I suppose it's one of the alpha's yur trying, there should be no loging with the FOS-1.0 LiveCD. Here's what ya have to do;
Hit Ctrl+Alt+F4
login as root
type passwd then add yur root password, twice
exit
ya might have to hit Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get back to kdm
Now you can login as root.

okay thanks for the tip. Got me out of trouble :D
Yes its the 1.1.84 (Alpha3 of v2)
Most live distros I've tried the last year or so give a root/root or a user/user pair of login choices rather than going straight in.
Makes them useable as a get-out-of-trouble distro if you have admin privileges.
I've been running the original Freespire a bit on several machines and like it.
Thanks again.

I havena tryed removing Jack in any of the alphas. If irc, jack is woven into kde and by removeing it one might remove some kde stuff and/or make it (kde or some stuff) unuseable. Give it a try & let us know.
Cheers
Using Synaptic, I removed jack audio and whatever else looked like it was used by jack. I also installed everything "alsa" and most "oss" got my sound GOOD now.
Maybe the devs will look into scrapping jack as so many folks are having sound issues.:cool::D:)
Now if I could just get kde to play right and save my session!,,,,,,,,lol I'd be a happy camper.

finally got aroumd to installing, now the complaints:
not only does Configure Network Settings in Startup Wizard not work, but contol center network settings part crashes. Obviously no doreport from me. found this: knetworkmanager does not autostart, and requires root permissions to load properly. have no idea how this is done! I run wireless no hard wireing here!!
any changes I made, none would take effect with out doing a system restart. Not the quickstart but full restart.
Until more gui stuff is working I guess all you'll get from me is wether or not it installs, which it did.

I installed it this morning. The configure network screen at first startup doesn't work but it still found the network card and I am on the internet just fine so I can't complain there.
Wanting to enable the root account, I went into Control Center only to find that Kuser was nowhere to be found. I ran kuser from the CL and got root enabled so that part is taken care of.
One thing I am wondering about is the sources list. I know there is a big list on the wiki but the sources that come with Alpha 3 only have 4 or 5 lines. Would it be better to leave it that way or should I add the ones from the wiki also?
I wanted to access my Firefox and Thunderbird profiles on my Freespire 1 partition and found that drive wasn't listed in my file manager. I went into the /mnt folder and found it. Is this as it should be?
Do the devs want a doreport sent in even on a successful install? If so, I will send one in.
Over all, I would say Freespire 2 is starting to look very good.

Ya know what they say 'bout crossing streams. Stick with the alpha3 sources.list, it's matched up to the debian etch one. Where as that long list in the wiki is more matched to what is all ready on offer via CnR (ie old stuff, sorry).

Everything seemed to go fine but this:
It downloaded a bunch of stuff but it doesn't look like anything upgraded.
Doing:
sudo dpkg --purge cvs
: at the command prompt ought to take care of that, but that's not the only issue.
Some failure with the los-detector.prerm script causes the removal of los-detector to fail. I don't know if it's a good thing to do or not, but if you delete /var/lib/dpkg/info/los-detector.prerm it won't get hung up at that point in the installation.
Also to give the best chance of success you should uninstall libmp4-0 and anything that depends on it. Try:
sudo apt-get remove libmp4-0
: If that doesn't work for some reason it should list the packages that prevent it from being uninstalled, which you can then include on the command line:
sudo apt-get remove package1 package2 etc...
Next gv creates an issue with the transition to the new X.org packages because the location it keeps some of it's files needs to be deleted and it's having files there prevents it, so you want to uninstall gv and anything that depends on it.
Also the display manager has to be restarted when libc6 is upgraded, which is bad if you are upgrading from inside of an X session and try to complete the upgrade anyway, so usually I would open a terminal window and type:
sudo /etc/init.d/ldm stop
: which will kill everything X and leave you at the text log in. Then log in and do:
sudo apt-get install libc6 locales
: Don't know if these are all the issues, I did bits and pieces instead of dist-upgrade, but these are the things that stand out in my mind.
Another potential issue, I don't know what kernel you end up with if you dist-upgrade or even if you end up with a kernel. So if everything completes successfully you want to look at /lib/modules/2.x.x and /boot to make sure the kernel modules directories that show up have stuff in them, that /boot has matching kernel and initrd images and if all that stuff looks good make sure /boot/grub/menu-normal.lst has an entry for the kernel.
Could be the process I used, but I ended up without a kernel after installing some packages and before rebooting had to go back and install linux-image-2.6.18-3-686 and los-kernel-extra-2.6.18-3-686, then open a terminal window and do:
detect probe
detect boot
jiffyboot
: to get the initrd image built and the grub stuff updated.

Whatever:
install from powering up with disk in about 9.5 minutes.
since having to configure wireless requires superuser every time I boot, which is no longer an option after 3rd try, no longer using. Superuser now fails to launch.
actual boot time after install about 1min 15 sec.
without super user several lttle things that I normally change are not testable now. I hate command line anyway.

Running Freespire 2.0 Alpha3 1.1.84 as LiveCD on my whitebox 1000 MHz 256 MB Mem.
First thing I checked was if I could access the other Windows partitions that Linspire 5.0.59 keeps locking me out of. = Yes, access available.
Discovered that some of the 'Settings' information that I could not find before has been shifted into a separate KInfoCenter app.
This showed that there was nothing in the Swap File.
A swap partition is available but not used. Maybe not identified, either.
Free memory was about 5 MB
However, with LBrowser [3 or 4 tabs], KInfoCenter and KSnapshot open, everything has ground to a halt. There has to be something wrong with memory management.
CPU usage was running at about 10%, so that was not the cause of the slowdown.
I used dmesg in a Konsole window to look at the messages that scrolled over the screen during start-up but saw nothing much untoward there.
I did a diagnostic report and submitted it, for what that is worth.
Unfortunately, with limited memory and no free space on my hard drive, I cannot do much more to test this version out.
I see that the next version is due out tomorrow. I will download that and give it a whirl and see how much different it is from this version.

Actually it is Alpha4 that is due today, Jan 11 2007.
What : Freespire 2.0 Beta1
When : Thu 25 Jan 2007
People keep confusing these two, mainly because the product is so good already, I think.
But just to set the record straight, Freespire 2.0 is still at the Alpha stage of development.

I'm pretty sure that this is Freespire 1.0, and it's the same thing that's available here for download.......Funny though if you look at the screen shots that the seller posted on Ebay, it's Beta 1.......Anyway, there are people who sell Linux CDs to people who have dial-up, and don't want to spend the time downloading the Distro themselves. I have NO idea though why the seller renamed the disk "Linux XP 2007" though, and I'm not to sure if this is legal in the first place.

Elinux made a script that'll handle up on Jack and install Alsa if need be, not sure why he hasn't mentioned on here yet but it works nicely for my test rig.
I guess Elinux doesn't care if I put this up here, feel free to try it if you dare.
Sorry about the .zip format, seems this forum software doesn't like gz or tar files
Run this file in a Konsole, it's going to install quite a bit of Alsa stuff from the repositories. Make sure you tell Jack not to run and instead set it to Alsa in the control center under sound. Then click the restart sound server button. Also make sure you run 'alsaconf' btw...if this breaks your computer in half you still own both halves. ;-)

I'll try the script from Elix, but not today. "Today we fight!!!", according to Aragorn. My fight is with words: I'm translating the Freespire User Manual to Portuguese (on Freespire 1.0).

I am wondering if maybe it would be better to forgo the final Alpha and just work on the first Beta release, even if it means waiting another week or so. I don't think we need another feature-incomplete release(e.g: no CNR, graphics missing, misc missing programs etc). It's been already determined by others that the previous Alphas were pretty well stable. Why bother waste everyones bandwith downloading another Alpha that basicaly just has an updated Lbrowser?

Seems like CNR would be a necessary step before releasing a Beta. To my understanding(I could be wrong) an Alpha release is software that is yet to be feature complete, and Beta software is feature complete, but not all bugs have been worked out yet. And since CNR is such a significant part of the OS, I would be hard pressed to call a release "feature complete" without it. Just my take.

Unfortunately the delay looks more like next week (BTW wouldn't plan on CNR in the initial Beta's)...The Network Control Panel has been more of a challenge than expected. The core package was changed after the first few iterations and currently wireless is not playing nicely. The MozDev team changed their system, so there's been issues creating a new LBrowser build based on FF 2.0. A release w/o the Network Control panel or Lbrowser 2.0 would be very similar to Alpha3. There you have the gory details and standing of FS 2.0 packages today...

Looks like Freespire might be falling a little behind the 8 ball. PCLinuxOS released their test release last week, and the final is due out next week. Now THAT'S progress. If the Freespire crew is having troubles getting Firefox re branded(new name, icons etc) I'm a little worried. Such a thing should be trivial.

From Distrowatch:
"Freespire openSUSE is not the only distribution that keeps us on our toes. Freespire, which has delayed its promised 4th alpha and first beta releases, is also preparing a surprise for its users. Answering a question on the distribution's mailing list about the recent delays, Kevin Carmony, the CEO of Linspire, replies: "We'll have an update soon. You'll understand the meaning to our madness soon enough, and we ask for your patience and indulgence for just a few more days." Linspire has already delivered a number of unexpected announcements to the Linux user community in recent months, including the opening up of the distribution's development process in the form of Freespire, freeing up the Click 'N Run (CNR) software repository, and announcing the availability of CNR to other distributions. What is it now? We'll have to wait and see...."

I hear people say a lot that Ubuntu supports their hardware and Freespire does not or Freespire supports their hardware and Ubuntu does not. I would image that Freespire would merge their drivers with Ubuntu's. So if all works out right then Freespire should be the best of both worlds.

well as experiment im using ubuntu atm..it has its own share of problems ..remember the ATI debocle not long ago..now its nvidia's turn..I installed nvidia-glx from synaptic,,did: sudo nvidia-glx-config enable..rebooted and no nvidia 3d drivers..they( not sure if its a ubuntu d ev or just a end user) blame binary driver of course but thats lame..
point is I think not nearly enough QA is done on most distros, and its starting to show bigtime..freespire has an excuse as they dont claim to be stable out of the box, but more bleeding edge like fedora or opensuse I imagine..
anyway just letting you know , from my vantage point ubuntu is not the holygrail of linux,- and frankly anymore I wonder if anything out there is.
speaking of which..if one were to be so inclined to consider freespire for a hopefully stable as possible env..'where' might one expect breakage or is that even possible to extrapolate ?

Now that I've had a few days to give it some thought, it might not be such a bad idea. I am assuming a few things though: Freespire will have the latest Kernel(7.04 is using 2.6.20), it will have the new KDE 3.5.6(which I am sure Kubuntu will have), the system will be nice and snappy. Thus far any 'buntu I've used just didn't seem to have that snap to it that I expect. Mepis is a prime example; when they switched over the Ubuntu, it just seemed like a slug. I actually have Ubuntu on my system(installed over a couple of months ago). I didn't use it for more than a few days. It just didn't seem to be making use of that shinny Dual core I've got under the hood. When I'd click on the menu, you could actually see the icons going down the screen; not cool. Though this could be a Gnome issue, I'm not sure. Anyway, I'll save judgment 'till the final release.
Definitely a deal breaker for me. Seems like they were getting nowhere on there own release so they just gave up, just like Mepis. Going back to PCLinuxOS when it goes final.

I asked the developers and yes, our next Freespire Alpha will have kernel 2.6.20 just like Feisty does.
I think in order for the OS to take advantage of your dual core machine you need to use the SMP version of that kernel....I beleive Ubuntu defaults to the 2.6.20-6-generic kernel.

My Freespire 1.0.13 has some wounds right now and I think it is time for a fresh install. I was going to give "2.0a 3" a shot but I have tried two days now and it will not download.
Do you think the Ubuntu base merger has anything to do with this ? I guess that would make sense that the original Freespire 2.0a would be cancelled until the developers gets their hands on the Ubuntu base.
What do you think ?

The generic Ubuntu kernel automatically sets up smp without installing a new kernel. I have a Athlon X2 4400 that the 2.6.17-11-generic in Edgy detects both cores at install.
According to the description for both 686 and k7 smp in synaptic, they have both been obsoleted by the generic kernel. Looks like they are going to do the same thing for feisty.

Honestly, I never really noticed all that much of a speed difference from stock 386 and smp anywho.:o
BTW: If anyone needs the latest Alpha of Freespire feel free to use my Mirror (http://basetex.org/freespire_1.1.84.iso) if you want to.
It's not listed on the wiki yet, I actually thought we'd be at Alpha 4 or Beta even by now.

Assuming the driver is packaged the same in Ubuntu as it is for Debian, you also have to install the kernel module that matches your kernel. Also if you have an older card you need to install the nvidia-legacy packages instead of Nvidia.
Maybe Ubuntu has it's own mechanism for changed video drivers, I have not investigated, but I would expect (if the individual required packages are all installed) to be able to open a terminal window and type:
sudo su
: then follow the normal Debian process of typing:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
: to change the X.org configuration. Not %100 percent sure this works in Ubuntu, because Debian didn't used to overwrite the xorg.conf file if it was manually edited or changed by some management tool other than debconf, but with the migration to the modular X.org packages there were too many configuration issues so now it does overwrite the file and makes a backup of the old configuration. I would expect this to be the case for Ubuntu as well.

The official Nvidia driver will update the xorg.conf file on its own in Freespire, I don't see why it would be all that different in Ubuntu. To my understanding the driver installer will find the xorg.conf file and your kernel sources if they are in the standard locations and then build and configure everything on its own. In my experience Nvidia has become very good at this, but I have only used it in Lin/Freespire.

Not exactly. See my post here (http://forum.freespire.org/showpost.php?p=31166&postcount=13) and that's just for starters, those are the most significant issues, but there is more on top of that. One in particular thing I remember that is not covered in my previous post, you have to uninstall gv and everything that depends on it, because the gv package puts a file in a location that needs to be deleted and recreated as a symlink causing the post install of the newer X.org packages to fail.
If you do the things outlined in my other post and the gv thing above, then do:
apt-get upgrade
: instead of dist-upgrade to pull in the easily upgradeable items then try the dist-upgrade, that give you the best chance of success.
It took some work and at some point I did have to apt-get install udev and the specific kernel packages that I wanted, but I was able to end up with a usable system. The last attempt did the right thing when I installed the newer kernel and related driver packages except I ended up having to boot from the live CD and edit the grub entry for the root drive to be a /dev/hda style of entry instead of a kernel style listing that Freespire/Linspire used in the past, without that change the root partition could not be found.
Any point where you have to remove packages to get others to install you should do 'apt-get upgrade' before attempting 'apt-get dist-upgrade' again.
Doing the upgrade is not an easy process, if you do attempt it and are successful, what you end up with will not be the same as what you would have if you installed from the installation CD. There will be old/obsolete packages that didn't get removed and there will be new packages that didn't get installed.

I hear people say a lot that Ubuntu supports their hardware and Freespire does not or Freespire supports their hardware and Ubuntu does not. I would image that Freespire would merge their drivers with Ubuntu's. So if all works out right then Freespire should be the best of both worlds.
99% of the drivers are from the kernel itself. So generally speaking, upgrading to a newer kernel adds more fucntionality. As does more recent ALSA (sound), CUPS(printer), gPhoto (cameras), and SANE(scanners).
Oddball hardware is the crap that people have flaky results with across the same distro, different revisions. I would guesstimate that most if not all drivers that dont work quite right across different distros are from either the default settings, creation, parameters (if you have built a kernel, that makes alot of sense, otherwise, .... go thru the kernel config and see all the options), or flat out a different version of aforementioned packages.

Thats a Linspire touch (or whoever packaged the drivers up rather). There was a rant by one of Red Hats guys about avoiding the nVIDIA supplied drivers and using a packaged one instead (like the Livna repo for Fedora/CentOS). Apparently the nVIDIA crew is screwing with dlls and not undoing it correctly when uninstalled.

I was refering to the drivers downloaded from Nvidia's site, not a deb package or anything on CNR. Just like in the Windows world, when it comes to video drivers I use the latest direct from Nvidia. On the Linspire side of things by the time they release a new version, Nvidia already has a newer driver.

True. I have had a few bad drivers that basically break Cedega or don't render transparent textures correctly. This seems, for me at least, isolated to the early drivers for the 8800 series of cards. I have had to re-install older drivers which when running the installer would detect the newer driver and ask me if I want it removed. This feature worked for me as long as I didn't try going too far back in revisions.

***thread hi-jack****
Debian Etch was "projected" for dec. not planned. :) It will likely be a while. I get the feeling we will see a new DPL before we see a new stable release. Still kind of ugly over there. Very two sided right now.
IMO you should never wait for a stable release from debian. Use testing. It breaks less than most distros and when it does it will likely be fixed asap! Edit- When debian testing is "broke" it does not mean YOUR install is "broke". It simply means that some things are being changed and are not in good shape right now on the server side. You do not have to pull those updates. Leave them there. I usually just get a good install and make sure my fav apps work until everything looks good again then if I want to update to get the latest version -cool. And if I do not want to risk it then I do not.
For desktop use I have no problem recommending it now. If you look thru those 100+/- bugs you will see they are not show stoppers, many involve documentation, license guideline checks and so forth. I personally have not ran into any bugs or other critters. The new installer is nice. Start the install with installgui if you want a pretty installer, just hit enter if you want then standard one.
Default desktops are NICE, not blinged but not plain bone stock default either. Nice colors, nice wallpaper. And everything JUST WORKS! I honestly do not (IIRC) need to configure anything.

True, I ran Woody for a while and now I have SID om my main desktop and Etch on all the other systems. Sarge is also perfect if you don't need the latest and greatest. I recently upgraded to Etch on my laptop because I needed some packages that were only in testing and not in stable.
Debian never really crashed on me (not counting SID since I had a few problems with SID before, but hey that's why they call it "UNSTABLE" right :D).
Debian Woody and Sarge are just rock solid (not running Etch long enough to judge about that, but I guess it's the same for Etch aswell).

Yeah, there are some problems when you "upgrade" from XFree86 to XOrg (nothing you can't fix though).
it's very possible a simple setting in the config that's not correct (my Xorg didn't work the first time because they used a diffrent keyboard module or name for it).
I just did a clean installation reformatting the drive when I upgraded to Etch (less conflicts but a bit loss of data is the result then :D :D).

As you know, we were hoping to get the first Alpha release of Freespire 2.0 on Ubuntu out before the end of the month. Unfortunately, we're going to miss that, but only by a few days. There are a few key items that are still giving us some trouble that need to get fixed before we can release this build. We will try really hard to have it out before the end of the week, but for sure sometime next week if not. (Dang February, if it only had 31 days. =)

I dona believe that you will be able to do an update from FOS-1.0 to any of the new builds of FOS. Although said function should be on offer once the ubuntu based FOS is on offer.
As for dual booting I dona think there will be any issues with that. Booting is a function of the bootstrapper, which is grub for *spire.

Will I be able to update that to the newest versions that are based on ubuntu easily, and would that effect the duel boot function already working? As posted updating to the latest FS 2.0 Alpha is not available (but it's an Alpha after all :), and apt-get dist-upgrade won't probably work due to package name differences, but planned is a resolution for the final release...

Are you saying we will be able to apt-get dist-upgrade from FOS-1.0 to FOS-2.0 once released?
Cheers

If I just download and install the newest version over the old, what do you think will happen?

Are you saying we will be able to apt-get dist-upgrade from FOS-1.0 to FOS-2.0 once released? My understanding, due to package name differences, this might not feasible, but alternative solutions are possible...

The Freespire installer is not setup that way. You either take over a partition (delete everything on that partition and install) or take over a drive (delete the drive and install). Even if this were not the case I think your system would be very messed up if you were able to copy the new files on top of your old ones. Due to package and file name differences you would basically have two copies on top of each other, your current kernel would (try to) boot but chances are many things would not work due to at least some files overwriting each other and some not working with the old ones, not to mention linked files an other Linux technicalities.
Basically I'm assuming you simply want to keep your current settings and such and not have to reconfigure your system back to the way it is. If you were able to copy all the new files over the old, you would have bigger problems than what you are trying to avoid.

I'm sure a few of us, myself included, are planning to mirror the ISO's again. It'll take me a while after it's released to get it uploaded to my hosting site unfortunately. I'll need to download it then upload it first.
We need a sideload option for ISO's
I was reading about rsync recently and I believe that it can do just that : --

rsync features
rsync is a file transfer program for Unix systems. rsync uses the "rsync algorithm" which provides a very fast method for bringing remote files into sync. It does this by sending just the differences in the files across the link, without requiring that both sets of files are present at one of the ends of the link beforehand. Some features of rsync include
can update whole directory trees and filesystems
optionally preserves symbolic links, hard links, file ownership, permissions, devices and times
requires no special privileges to install
internal pipelining reduces latency for multiple files
can use rsh, ssh or direct sockets as the transport
supports anonymous rsync (http://sunsite.auc.dk/SunSITE/rsync/rsync-mirroring.html) which is ideal for mirroring

Hallo, Am I stupid or something??? WHAT THE HELL IS THE USERNAME+PASSWORD? I tried a LOT of names and passwords, but nothing worked... so what's correct?? BTW: Perhaps it has anything to do with it: there is no boot splash... the screen is black until KDM appears on the screen... Oli...
