I just installed Freespire after being a Windows user for years. I was one of the testers for Firerfox (both 1.5 and 2) and I'd love to run Fx 2 here on Freespire so I downloaded it now that it's officially out. The only problem is that I don't want to wait for it to hit CNR and I don't know how to install it under any flavor of Linux. I'm pretty good when it comes to working in the WinOS, but I can't quite find info on this. Can someone help out a Linux noob?

firefox comes as a precompiled binary, so all you have to do is got to their website and download it. you should be able to double click on one of the files in the folder to run it.

Thanks, that got it! This is so much better. I was even ale to get a link on my desktop. Now all I have to do is add some extensions and get the desktop link to show the Fx logo.

I also got the newest build of Thunderbird (a pre-beta of Tb2) installed. Can anyone tell me if it's possible to import my Tb/Win info (accounts, folders, etc)?

I imported my Thunderbird and Firefox profiles when I switched from Windows to Linspire over a year ago. Everything worked just fine.

I don't have to modify anything? That rocks! Thank you! I'll do that right now.

With Ark. When the download completes, Ark should open automatically. just select Extract from the Action drop down menu. You will get a dialog asking where to extract.

I just installed it as a user (not an admins group member) opened with ark and extracted it to the default name openttd_????, and then ran the firefox .sh It ran fine, except not maximized the screen size, also some extensions are not ready, eg fasterfox and tor privoxy --although you can fix the individual speed up entries yourself, but it seems to run fast enough without any tweaks..

Installed as user after downloading tar file from firefox web site, it runs fine --had to use mozilla-run.sh script, as the firefox-bin did not work (but did not check permissions for that file to see if it was actually executable), I had thought the firefox-bin file would run Second what to do about the plugins --they are lodated in /usr/lib/firefox/plugins and are mostly mplayer, if you check the about:plugins in the original lbrowser, you will see this --just copy them to your plugins location in the firefox 2.0 extracted directory (folder ? window-ish jargon)

I didn't do this with Firefox, although I did do it with Thunderbird and it worked okay.I neded up re-adding all my extensions anyway. One extension glitch I'm noticing is that check box for forcing compaitbility from the Nightly Testers Tool doesn't work, but I'll let the developer know about it.

If you like Nightly Tester Tools you might like this extension.

Yeah, I've seen that one, but I've also seen news of conflicts with other extensions so I've been a little leary of trying it. I get pretty busy between my site and the 'net radio station I work with so I try to keep problems to a minimum where possible.

I haven't seen any conflicts at all. Here is a list of extensions I run with it.
[quote]Adblock Plus, Adblock Filterset.G Updater, All-In-One Sidebar, Bookmark Backup, Chatzilla, ForecastFox Enhanced, InFormEnter, Mouse Gestures, SmoothWheel, Tab Mix Plus, & User Agent Switcher. It has never failed to make one of them work, with no conflicts.

I've seen some conflicts in the Nightly Builds forum over at MozillaZine. It's okay though. I honestly can't think about trying new extensions until I get MySQL and Wine set up on this box so I can test my broadcasting software.

Thanks, but I'll stick to what I'm used to straight from Mozilla. Just in the week I've been using Freedpire I'm honestly not at all happy with how they tweak settings, cookies and popups in particular.

the settings in the browser can be changed by typing about:config into the address bar. instructions on how to use that can be found here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_FAQs_:_About:config_Entries

Trust me, I know about them from testing pre-release versions of Mozilla software for over a year. I was saying I wasn't interested in having to change settings all over again just to get it from CNR. Quite frankly I wonder how many people ar eaware of how many cookies are accepted from ad supliers without their knowing, and why their popup blocker isn't stopping all teh ad popups. I know I wondered about the popups, and I investigated it which is how I know how many settings I had to undo.

i use flashblock and adblock with filterset.g, so i don't have a lot of ad problems. you should notify the firefox team if the settings are making the popupblocker less effective.

I'll do that, although the only place I've seen the changes were in teh Web Browser Freespire based on the Fox. I haven't tried the verison of the Fox they have in CNR since I see it includes customizations. I spent enough time getting Fx 2 running on this box. ;)
